Ceres 939
Dwarf planet, largest in belt

Vesta 525
Differentiated protoplanet

Pallas 511
Primitive, bright surface

Hygiea 433
Nearly spherical, S-type

These four bodies dominate the asteroid belt’s mass and are the only ones large enough to be studied in detail by spacecraft such as NASA’s Dawn mission, which visited both Vesta and Ceres

The asteroid belt is a torus-shaped region in the Solar System, centered on the Sun and roughly spanning the space between the orbits of the planets Jupiter and Mars. It contains a great many solid, irregularly shaped bodies called asteroids or minor planets. The identified objects are of many sizes, but much smaller than planets, and, on average, are about one million kilometers (or six hundred thousand miles) apart. This asteroid belt is also called the main asteroid belt or main belt to distinguish it from other asteroid populations in the Solar System.
The asteroid belt is the innermost and smallest circumstellar disc in the Solar System. Its total mass is estimated to be 3% that of the Moon, with about 60% contained in the four largest asteroids: Ceres, Vesta, Pallas, and Hygiea. Classes of small Solar System bodies in other regions are the near-Earth objects, the

The Moon is the only natural satellite of Earth. It orbits around Earth at an average distance of 384,399 kilometers (238,854 mi), a distance roughly 30 times the width of Earth. It completes an orbit (lunar month) in relation to Earth and the Sun (synodically) every 29.5 days. The Moon and Earth are bound by gravitational attraction, which is stronger on the sides facing each other. The resulting tidal forces are the main driver of Earth's tides, and have pulled the Moon to always face Earth with the same near side. This tidal locking effectively synchronizes the Moon's rotation period (lunar day) to its orbital period (lunar month).
In geophysical terms, the Moon is a planetary-mass object or satellite planet. Its mass is 1.2% that of the Earth, and its diameter is 3,474 km (2,159 mi), roughly one-quarter of Earth's (about as wide as the contiguous United States). Within the Solar System, i…

That's on this site and in the footer is a link to a piece about panning for gold in a sustainable, environmentally friendly fashion to enhance the finances of individuals while addressing the substantial NEED for more gold for purposes of meeting the need for such metals for TECHNOLOGICAL advancement and development and SPACE development.

Off the top of my head, cap POSSIBLY full of errors:
We've only extracted 5 percent of the gold on Earth and there's plenty more, but historical practices were damaging to the environment. It doesn't have to be handled that way.

Talks about the asteroid belt being a source of rare earth minerals and that we should create space stations on the four largest asteroids before trying to colonize Mars because we NEED those minerals to colonize Mars.

Major space organizations should be working towards a lunar colony and maybe dividing up ownership or development rights or whatever for the four largest asteroids which are about 60 percent of the mass of the asteroid belt. We can MINE the hell out of the other forty percent and, you know, I'm not going to live long enough to need to worry about problems like "And THEN what? What do we do after we have cleared most of the asteroid belt?"

But establishing access to the minerals in the asteroid belt needs to precede colonization of Mars.

Do these two ideas SOLVE the rare earth minerals pipeline problem? I don't know. But they are definitely a step in the right direction.

Footnote
We need to recruit Inuit and/or establish a training station or something in northern Alaska for colonizing the Moon because The Garden Spot of Ceti Alpha Luna is the POLES which hover around the freezing point perpetually instead of swinging wildly between burn you up and insta freeze you.
